You’ve had a rough year, and the bills don’t stop coming just because the holiday season is here. Maybe you’re just feeling overwhelmed by the shopping chaos. Whatever the reason, there is absolutely nothing wrong with scaling down gift giving, especially in today’s economy.
Simply approach your friends and family well ahead of time. Explain that you don’t want to end gift giving all together. Try suggesting a swap, or limiting gifts to children only. Homemade gifts are always a great alternative, too.
Chances are, no one will be offended by your suggestion. They’ll probably admit that they were feeling the same way. The holidays are about spending time with loved ones and being thankful for what you have; don’t let the stress of gift giving ruin your fun.
