Keep Pets Safe

The holidays can be a stressful time for all of us, including our four-legged friends.  Do your best to keep your pets happy and safe this holiday season.  Keep these tips in mind.

1)      Never give a pet as a holiday gift.  The holidays are very hectic and added stress is not good for anyone.  A new pet should be introduced to the family during a time of peace and quiet.  Just like babies, young pets need lots of rest.  They are not toys.  Try giving pet supplies or informational books to your friends and family.  That way, they will be prepared to get a pet in the future.

2)      No matter how cute you think it looks, never tie a bow or ribbon around your pet’s neck.  A pet could easily tighten the ribbon by itself.  Also, the ribbon could become caught on something and the pet could hang itself.

3)      Even though you’re busy, do your best to maintain a regular food and exercise schedule for your pets during the holidays.

4)      Avoid feeding your pet too many table scraps.  People food is very rich and will often upset a pet’s stomach.  Never give your pet poultry bones either.  These bones splinter easily and could become lodged in your pet’s throat or stomach.

5)      Keep your pets in mind while decorating your home.  Hang the more durable ornaments lower on the Christmas tree.  Also, be sure to keep, open flames, wrapping paper, food, and fragile gifts where pets can get to them.
